About Us

Engage, Research, Educate, Preserve and Inspire.

At Tryon Palace, we’re committed to being good stewards of all that has been handed down to us: our history, our people, our culture, as well as our natural and physical resources. This commitment is reflected in our mission statement and in every activity we promote, every exhibit we display and every handshake we offer.

Our Vision

Tryon Palace demonstrates that history is dynamic. An active research program provides the foundation for continual changes in interpretation, exhibits and educational programs. With each visit, we invite visitors to determine their educational experience from a changing menu of choices including interactive programs, historical demonstrations, first-person interpretation and participation in activities of the past.

Tryon Palace emphasizes scholarship and research in the pursuit of historical accuracy. We encourage learning through exploration and participation using the museum’s historical and professional resources. We strive to spark visitor curiosity and encourage continual learning about North Carolina’s contribution to American history. We require that our staff be truthful and accurate in all aspects of their work.

Tryon Palace’s product is the quality of the visitor experience. Customer service is a longstanding priority and we strive to make visitors feel welcome. Since 1959, our customer service motto has been “knowledge, enthusiasm and graciousness” or “KEG” and that slogan still resonates today.

Tryon Palace values a knowledgeable, ethical, results-oriented, gracious, accountable, professional and adaptable staff. The museum supports individual development in a team environment. Managers are expected to seek and utilize input and to regularly foster professional growth in employees. Information is shared broadly in the organization.

Tryon Palace preserves and secures historical resources and human and physical assets to provide a functional, safe and accessible environment. Stewardship of historic objects, buildings and landscapes is an ongoing priority.
